Getting around the Bay by boat

Two public operators run the ferries on San Francisco Bay. SF Bay Ferry serves the East Bay, South San Francisco and Vallejo. Golden Gate Ferry serves Marin: Larkspur, Sausalito, Tiburon and Angel Island. Almost every route starts or ends at the Ferry Building in San Francisco.

The boats are slower than BART on some trips, but they skip the traffic, the bridges and the tunnels. Most take Clipper, carry bikes, and come with the best views in the Bay Area. This board puts both operators on one screen, so you always know the next boat and the last one.

Questions

What time is the last ferry from San Francisco?

It depends on the route. Pick the Ferry Building on the board above: every destination shows its last boat of the day, highlighted when it leaves within 90 minutes.

Which ferries does thebay.app cover?

Every SF Bay Ferry route (Oakland & Alameda, Harbor Bay, Alameda Seaplane, Richmond, South San Francisco, Vallejo and the Oakland–Alameda water shuttle) and every Golden Gate Ferry route (Larkspur, Sausalito, Tiburon and Angel Island).

Are the times live?

They are the operators' scheduled times, updated from their published data. Delays and cancellations are posted on the operators' alert pages, linked under the board. Live boat tracking is coming.

What if I miss my boat?

Open "Missed it?" on any destination: it shows the next boat after yours and, between Oakland and San Francisco, the next BART train with the walk to the station.

Can I add thebay.app to my home screen?

Yes. In Safari tap Share, then Add to Home Screen; in Chrome use Install app or Add to Home screen. It opens like an app and remembers your terminal.
